Why We Chose the MIYOTA 8N40 for RESTA
Why We Chose the MIYOTA 8N40 for RESTA
Mechanical watch movements can be compared through many specifications, including accuracy, frequency and power reserve.
When developing RESTA, however, we were not simply looking for the movement with the highest specifications.
Our aim was to create a watch that combined the understated character of a 1950s dress watch with the reliability required for everyday use today. The Japanese-made MIYOTA 8N40 was the movement that best suited this vision.
A Small Seconds Display That Defines the Design
One of RESTA’s most distinctive features is its small seconds display at six o’clock.
By placing the seconds hand away from the centre of the dial, the design creates a greater sense of space and gives the watch its calm, classical appearance.
This was one of the main reasons we selected the 8N40. Its small seconds layout allowed us to achieve the balanced dial design we envisioned for RESTA.
The movement was not chosen to dominate the watch, but to support its overall proportions and character.
Confidence in a Japanese Mechanical Movement
MIYOTA is a Japanese movement manufacturer with a long history of supplying mechanical movements to watch brands around the world.
The 8N40 offers automatic winding as well as manual winding, with a power reserve of approximately 42 hours. It provides the practicality and reliability needed for a mechanical watch designed to be worn regularly.
Its proven history and future serviceability were also important considerations. We want our watches to be enjoyed for many years, not simply at the moment they are purchased.
The Mechanical Character Visible Through the Case Back
RESTA features a sapphire crystal case back, allowing the movement to be viewed while it is running.
The 8N40 is not an elaborately decorated movement. However, watching the rotor turn and the mechanism operate reveals the honest, functional beauty that makes mechanical watches so engaging.
Giving the wearer a view into the watch’s inner workings was another important part of creating RESTA as a mechanical timepiece.

Choosing What Best Suits the Watch
There are movements with higher frequencies, longer power reserves and more impressive numbers on a specification sheet.
Nevertheless, we did not choose RESTA’s movement based on specifications alone.
The 36mm case, the small seconds display, the character of vintage dress watches and the reassurance of a Japanese-made movement all needed to work together as one complete design.
For RESTA, we believed the MIYOTA 8N40 was the right choice.
The movement may sit at the heart of the watch, but the wearer remains at the centre of everything we create. Our goal is to make a watch that feels natural to wear and can remain part of everyday life for many years.
That is why we chose the MIYOTA 8N40 for RESTA.
